The broad-based Medical Technology degree programme combines the fundamentals of science, medicine and engineering with practical application. You will learn how to develop medical devices – from the initial idea through to regulatory approval.

Structure and content

In addition to general fundamentals, the programme also covers topics from the research and development of medical technology products, quality management systems and the product life cycle. The subject also includes the areas of biomaterials, implants, robotics and medical informatics. Various project-based learning laboratories round off the study programme.

In the Medical Technology programme, you will benefit from strong regional partnerships, particularly with companies in the Neckar-Alb region. You will learn directly from experts in the field about the engineering and scientific principles behind the products and the career opportunities available in development, manufacturing, quality management, sales and at the interface with clinics.

You will learn directly from experts in the field about the engineering and scientific principles behind the products and the career opportunities available in development, manufacturing, quality management, sales and at the interface with clinics.

This close cooperation not only provides you with exciting insights, but also concrete opportunities for internships, project work and career entry. In the fourth semester, you will work on a real product as part of an industry project – with a focus on development planning and change management. The content is taken up and explored in depth in lectures, e.g. in the Quality Management and Product Life Cycle module.

What makes the medical technology degree programme in Reutlingen special?

From concept to approval: you will gain an understanding of the entire medical device development process – through practical, hands-on experience integrated into your degree programme. Right from the first semester, your lectures will cover real products from regional medical technology companies – including development plans, regulatory approval and change management.

You will study at the intersection of engineering, medicine and computer science – with modules from several faculties and real-world projects. The combination of engineering, scientific and medical fundamentals will provide you with the ideal preparation for complex challenges.

Right from the first semester, you’ll gain hands-on experience of medical technology: local companies will showcase real-world products and provide insights into the technology, applications and career paths. In the fourth semester, you’ll develop a product yourself as part of an industry project – with a focus on planning and change management.

You will not only learn how to develop products – but also how to obtain regulatory approval for them. Regulatory requirements are not a side issue here, but an integral part of the course – taught in a practical way using real-life examples.

You’ll gain early insights into various product areas and career fields, helping you discover where your interests lie. Our close collaboration with companies opens up opportunities for work placements, project work and starting your career.

The programme is modular and flexible in structure – offering a range of options and specialisations. This allows you to work towards a subsequent master’s degree and plan your career strategically.

A degree in medical technology opens up a wide range of career paths – in the development of modern medical products, in clinics, at medical technology manufacturers, in biotechnology and in research and testing institutes. The demand for qualified specialists is growing steadily, and there are excellent career opportunities both regionally and nationally.

Master's degree

This modular degree programme allows you to choose your own areas of specialisation and prepare specifically for a Master’s degree. With 210 ECTS credits, you will meet the entry requirements for many further programmes. Depending on the type of institution (university of applied sciences or university) and the subject area, different entry requirements or conditions may apply.

Typische Tätigkeiten nach dem Abschluss sind:

  • MedTech‑Produktentwickler: Konzipieren, testen und validieren von Medizinprodukten
  • Projektkoordination in MedTech‑Teams
  • Regulatory Affairs Specialist: Zulassung und Normkonformität
  • Quality Engineer: Qualitätsprozesse für Medizinprodukte sicherstellen

Anschlussoptionen

Absolventinnen und Absolventen des Bachelorstudiengangs Medizintechnik können ihr Studium an der Hochschule Reutlingen in den Masterprogrammen Biomedical Sciences  sowie Maschinenbau (Vertiefung Produktentwicklung) nahezu nahtlos fortsetzen. 

Eine weitere attraktive Option ist der Masterstudiengang Human Centered Computing mit Vertiefung Medizin-Informatik. Noch bestehende Kompetenzlücken sollen künftig durch ein geplantes Schwerpunktfeld Software Lifecycle & Regulatory Compliance im Bachelorstudiengang Medizintechnik gezielt geschlossen werden.
